Anna NEMES: Sheets February 25, 2016 - March 26, 2016

In February 2016, at the season-opening exhibition of the Várfok Project Room, a promising young talent, Anna Nemes (born in 1989, Budapest/H) will exhibit her works. Despite her young age, Nemes – who graduated in 2014 from the Painting Department of the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts in the class of Imre Bukta – has had a number of individual and several group exhibitions.

The main focus of her artistic interest is the human body. While on her earlier paintings disabled people, body builders, her relatives, or animals were presented, on her recent paintings exhibited at the Várfok Project Room her closest friends and family, or even herself and her body also appear – thus, we can see lying nude figures or self-portraits frozen into different grimaces on the walls. The figures are taken out of their surroundings and contexts, thus strengthening the reflexive attitude, delving deeper into the human psyche.

Anna Nemes’ works are defined by the special and unique way of using watercolour: in her monumental, large scale canvases, floating figures appear in the empty, pure white background. On the artworks created with great technical skills and precision, the figurative compositions are formed by the different patches and flows of watercolour and their correlations. This special method allows her to dissolve the material weight of the bodies into the transparent layers of watercolour.
