Károly Keserü: papers May 08, 2019 - May 08, 2019

The Várfok Project Room’s next exhibition will be Karoly Keserü’s recent works, entitled ‘Papers’ which focus on the artist’s paper-based artworks.

Karoly Keserü (1962, Budapest) joined the permanent artist circle of the Várfok Gallery in 2014. In 1987 he emigrated to Australia where he completed his Fine Art studies at Swinburne University and the Victorian College of the Arts. In 2000 he won one of the most significant fine art prizes of Australia, ‘The Samstag’, which enabled him to continue his studies at Central Saint Martins in London, where he gained his Masters Degree. Keserü is represented by galleries in London, Vienna and Hungary and his work is regularly shown at international art fairs and exhibitions around the world. His works can be found in numerous prestigious collections in Australia, the United States and throughout Europe.

The exhibited paperworks provide an insight into the characteristic, creative world of Keserü, in which, besides the influence of significant figures of abstract geometric art, we also see the effects of Dadaism and John Cage's compositions. The roots of his repetitive artworks are linked to the music and arts of folklore and are based on the repeat of simple visual elements such as grids, lines, and dots. The playful system of lines sometimes form a grid or may swirl on the paper with colourful dots becoming increasingly dense or dissolving  into it.

In comparison with his paintings, the main difference in the paper-based works is that the role of chance is more apparent in addition to conscious construction. Karoly Keserü explained this as follows, “My works on paper tend to be a bit expressive and experimental but they are strongly connected to the paintings. The major elements like repetition and minimal imagery persist but the paper works are more instant, playful and improvisation plays a larger part. Chance comes in and I like that”.
