Mathias Schauwecker: The Indistinct Breath of the Image July 01, 2011 - July 30, 2011

In the centre of the Swiss Mathias Schauwecker’s attention is - beyond any doubt - the Human being: through depicted writhen bodies and autonom, almost alive body-parts the artist invites us to escort him during a long journey into the secret and labirinthine depths of human psyche. At the same time, his use of colours is to be considered as important as the theorical background of his works. Hence at his exhibiton in Budapest visitors will not only discover his monumental paperworks, but will also see some of his vibrating paintings, completed with a video-work (2010) yet only presented in Italy before.
The Swiss Mathias Schauwecker’s (b. 1967, Zürich) first solo show at Várfok Gallery was organised in 2008. The artist, who studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (Paris / F), is strongly tied to  psychoanalysis, first of all to the theories of some of the savants of the beginning of the 20th century (Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, Sándor Ferenczi, etc.). Next to his fine art œuvre Schauwecker is deeply interested in other genres as well: he has already worked together several times with dancers or writers (e.g. Iain Watson), but one will discover he is also related to film industry: in 2003 the director Marc Foster (Quantum of Solace; Stranger than Fiction; Finding Neverland) asked him to cooperate in his film, Stay (Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor).
The works presented in Várfok Gallery in 2011 can be divided into two bigger sections, or rather into three, if we take the video separately.
On the one hand will be exhibited Schauwecker’s newest, more than 2 m high, monumental paperworks. The strange creatures appearing on these surfaces can be interpreted as masses of body parts or on the contrary, one might discover on the works their destructuration. On the other hand the exhibition will present his forceful paintings made with mixed technique. The shadows and silhouettes of the Sleepwalker’s (title of the serie) appear like a transition between dream and real world.
But Schauwecker usually unfolds rather a monster than a human on his works: whether we see a mutant hybrid or a homunculus genetically transformed due to the biological manipulation of our age – one cannot be sure enough.
By subverting the elemental physical facts, he queries the basic essence of human being, starting with quetionning the buildup of the Human body.
