Róbert Várady: Acroscope January 23, 2013 - March 02, 2013

Being Convenient... (?) – this is the picture’s title. The work displayed on the invitation card of Róbert Várady’s (b. 1950, Budapest) most recent exhibition is an affirmation and a question at the same time, while it invites us to reflection too – as we are used to, considering his past œuvre. However, the works to be presented at the show titled Acroscope are not exactly continuing the painter’s more or less familiar train of thought where the spectator would expect it, as a determinative element comes (once again) in the foreground of nearly every work: space.
Taking in consideration the past periods of Várady’s œuvre  within a decade – focusing on the formal aspect of the œuvre – we mainly encounter planes, abstract, geometrical shapes, fractals, or ’meandering’ figures, (well-known) people created with a particular realism and represented in rigorous poses, or perhaps heads appearing at different points of the interface – all in front of a background of planes. The application on canvas of real, or – as Várady calls them – imaginary spaces reminds us at first of his works made in the first part of the 1980s: since, one would have hardly encountered such creations – until around year 2009. At the exhibition organised by the Municipal Art Museum of Győr at the end of 2010, some works were already samples of the tendency to be since developed.
