Sebastian Weissenbacher: Our Daily Bread

Sebastian Weissenbacher is an artist with a peculiar view of the world. His professor at the Vienna Academy was Arnulf Rainer. After he left school, he is concerned with visual commonplaces, and the trivial and artificial reality. From the 1990s he makes his so-called "“beautiful” pictures. In his paintings he mostly represents precisely drawn plastic toys. Most of his works try to reveal the mechanism of kitsch, and show the absurd and grotesque manifestations of our artificial surroundings, which become more and more a substitute to reality. As Pop-art only quots from our visual surroundings, in connection with Weissenbacher’s work we may talk about the poetical criticism of this special esthetic category. His position is satiric and humorous. He often makes installations as well.
