László Szotyory (1957, Kolozsvár / Cluj, Romania) lives since 1970 in Hungary. He finished the Academy of Fine Arts, Hungary in 1983 and has been honoured by the Hungarian state with the Munkácsy Prize in 2000. In 2004 when he received the Palladium Award he said that the act of painting caused him sensual pleasure, those landscapes he was painting, were like the ones in his dreams, and through the act of realizing them on canvas they became real. Parks, gardens and forests appearing on the canvases are places, where he himself would gladly wander around. For Szotyory parks are a scene of an unfinished story, an enigmatic atmosphere, surrounded by some kind of secret "– thus it is always painted with airy brush strokes only implying the real view. His dream-like scenes, sensitively painted with only using a few colours, are often direct impacts of films, pictures or works of art.
At this exhibition we are presenting his latest paintings representing Italian gardens. Szotyory spent two months in Rome in the summer of 2004, the sceneries appearing on the canvases are due to this excursion, they are memories of the beauties seen during this stay. As before, we again see real picturing of landscapes but this time beside narration the abstract gesture became more dominant. Paintings are airy, the canvases were kept empty at several places and the clear paint often left the crayon visible.
