László Győrffy, in the past five years, has revealed his ideas on the position of portrait painting today in the form of the Mutants I.-II.-III. Trilogy. The three series of paintings were realisations of Győrffy’s aesthetic programme (hybridisation), which meant the combining of digital image creation with the classic traditions of painting within a piece. The disillusioning effects that broke the illusionist means of depiction made the viewer conscious of the painting’s two-fold nature, whilst the changing of dimensions lead to an unknown, irrational space where our everyday fears and anxieties surface.
In the pieces of his current exhibition he focuses on this irrational space. In Győrffy’s work an important role is given to his pursuits in graphic art which he has been occupied with, and which has been running parallel with his painting since 2003. Unlike his intellectual approach to painting, these rather map out the "“motivations of the gut-instinct of the ego." ” They display the horror and absurdity of existence by applying a radically narrative approach through the decaying states of the human body, with the aid of apocalyptic etchings, medical diagrams and the world of cartoons, animations. The title of the exhibition and the central painting is Two Curators Looking for an Umbilical Chord, which sufficiently expresses the critical tone and heavy atmosphere of the displayed material, plenty in black humour.
The 9 oil on canvas pieces, varying in size, and the 22 A4 sized, mixed technique graphics were created within the context of the montage-aesthetic explained above, from sources of most disparate origins, applying literary and film experiences as well.
In this surreal and alluring exhibition along with questions that have been preoccupying Győrffy up to now (spiritual and biological catastrophes, genetics, death, self-representation,etc.) new themes such as sexual conflicts, divorce, alcohol and drug addiction arise.
